A Day in Miss Kates's Class!
Morning Meeting: Our class gathers every morning to say hello to our teachers and classmates as well as to go over our schedule for the day. By getting together as a group, we are able to practice attending to a large group activity as well as our social skills.
Discrete Trial Work Time: Discrete trial teaching is a unique method of teaching for students with autism. Each student has a set of programs specifically designed for them. They work on skills such as gross motor imitation; receptive and expressive identification of letters, numbers, shapes, and colors; sorting; matching; pre-writing; and counting. Positive reinforcement is used to reward students in every work session.
Lunch: Our students eat lunch in the cafeteria with the older students. They learn how to carry their lunchboxes or purchase their lunch and eat their lunches in the appropriate order with the appropriate utensils.
Specials: Our students attend art, library, music, and physical education. They have a lot of fun creating beautiful art projects, listening to exciting stories, learning new songs, and playing new games.
Afternoon Group: Every afternoon, our class participates in groups designed around fine motor, gross motor, oral motor, and sensory integration. Our class enjoys activities that help to improve our skills; some favorites include making cookies, having imaginary snowball fights, and playing with shaving cream and Play-Doh!
