Woods Road School had a very special guest visit our third and fourth-grade students today. Principal, Ms. Howe arranged for a surprise visit from her friend, Tom Hutchinson, who is the principal cornet with the world famous Cory Band from Wales in the UK. He was Principal Cornet with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and played for four years with the Black Dyke Band winning all the major titles. Professor of Cornet at the Royal Welsh College of Music, Mr. Hutchinson is also a Besson Artist. He has been a Guest Soloist around the world and recently released his first solo album, In Principal. On December 18, 2016, Mr. Hutchinson was a Guest Soloist with the Princeton-Rider Brass Band for their Annual Holiday Concert.
Today, Woods Road students were treated to a question and answer session with Mr. Hutchinson. They also learned the parts of the cornet instrument as well as the instruments which are in a Brass Band. Mr. Hutchinson played a few holiday favorites with our music teacher, Mr. Steege, as students sang along. Mr. Hutinchson encouraged students to continue to practice, practice and practice as they pursue their music education. Principal Howe said, "The students and staff truly enjoyed his performance. Not only is this an example of globalizing the curriculum, but it provided a hands-on musical experience for our students.
