In September, our fourth graders read the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown about a character who gets flattened by a bulletin board. He survives and makes the best of his altered state. Throughout the story, he slides under doors, acts a kite for his brother, and visits friends by being mailed in an envelope. After reading, our students wrote letters to friends and family. Along with it, we mailed our own Flat Stanleys to different places in the United States. This activity cultivates cross-curricular concepts such a writing friendly letters, and learning about the states/regions.
