Flat Stanley Visits the White House

Flat Stanley Visits the White House

In September, our fourth graders read the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown about a character who gets flattened by a bulletin board. He survives and makes the best of his altered state. Throughout the story, he slides under doors, acts a kite for his brother, and visits friends by being mailed in an envelope. After reading, our students wrote letters to friends and family. Along with it, we mailed our own Flat Stanleys to different places in the United States. This activity cultivates cross-curricular concepts such a writing friendly letters, and learning about the states/regions.

We were very excited to hear back from our returning "friend." This past week, we received Sara and Nivi's Flat Stanley that came all the way from the White House. The students were eager to see pictures from President Barrack Obama and his family (even their dogs, Bo and Sunny) and read his personalized letter. We enjoyed viewing a map of the White House and learned more about the job of the president. It was amazing to see everyone's face light up with excitement.
